What are the benefits of Web-Merchant?
Web-Merchant allows merchants to promote their business to a potential
customer base of over 100 million. Compared to traditional methods of
business, which have many times the investment in terms of setup cost,
and a far smaller potential customer base, setting up shop on the Internet
using Web-Merchant makes complete economic sense.
What are the different products and could you describe their benefits?
Multi-Currency Processing
Allows a merchant to accept credit and debit card payments from shoppers
in multi-currency. The benefits of this product are that customers are
able to place orders from anywhere in the world so, unlike single currency
payment systems, they can avoid currency fluctuations, safe in the knowledge
that the transaction is being handled by NatWest, a leading international
bank. A multi-currency payment option encourages your customers to order
from your web site, rather than go elsewhere.
Single Currency Processing
Allows a merchant to accept credit and debit card payments from shoppers
in the merchant's domestic currency only. The benefit of using this product
is that it is linked to the majority of the UK clearing banks, and so
provides a facility for paying your web site revenue directly into your
own bank. Therefore, it guarantees that your e-commerce sales revenue
is paid to you in the fastest possible manner. The system is ideal for
local e-commerce activities, where the bulk of the transactions may be
based upon a combined on-line shopping and delivery service, or alternatively
to provide access to a secure area of a web site.
Micro-Payments System
Allows a merchant to accept small payments from shoppers because the payments
are too small to use a credit card without incurring bank charges. Web-Merchant
allow the shopper to pay up to £50 into his Micro-Payment account and
to use small units of up to 19 currencies (for example, 1 penny Sterling
or 1 American cent) in Micro-Payment subscribing shops on the Internet.
How easy is it for my customers to use?
When the customer is shopping, they simply selects the item(s) they require.
They enter card details into the payment form at the end of the shopping
process, then authentication is carried out and withdrawal is made from
their account in their local currency. The whole process takes a matter
of seconds from beginning to end.
If I wish to collect transactions with a low individual value, is this
possible?
Yes, with the Micro-Payments solution. Transactions as low as an individual
unit in any of 19 core currencies can be made.
Do we need our site published on the Web before we can apply to WorldPay?
No. It is better to apply for Web-Merchant as early as possible, to ensure
that your Merchant account is set up when your site is set up.
How long do transactions take to authenticate and clear?
Despite the range of security measures required to authenticate a customer's
card, transactions still clear in a matter of seconds.
Are there any goods or services that I can not sell over the Internet
using Web-Merchant?
Yes, any "Adult" or unlicenced gaming/gambling services. Also, our acquiring
banks all have a list of prohibited goods and services.
Once we have set up with Web-Merchant, can we amend the amount of products
that we are selling?
Yes, as long as the additional products are of a similar nature. If you
wish to add products that are of a different nature, you must first inform
Web-Merchant.
Does the name Web-Merchant or WorldPay appear on the customers Bank
statement?
If you are a Bank acquired merchant, then only your company name will
appear on the customers statement. However, if you are a Web-Merchant
Bureau merchant, then your company name will appear with: e.g Your Company
- WorldPay.
Will I be able to process refunds if necessary?
Yes, refunds are allowed through a secure Merchant Management System.
This facility also allows delayed authorisations, as well as transaction
queries and listings.
If I already have a Merchant account do I need a separate Web-Merchant
one?
If you already have a merchant account, you may still need a separate
merchant number for Internet processing. Web-Merchant can advise you on
how to go about setting up these accounts.
Is there a separate procedure to take payments via American Express
and Diners Club?
Yes, you will need to have an American Express or Diners Club merchant
number. You can obtain this by applying direct to American Express and
Diners. Web-Merchant can advise you on this process.
Who pays the credit card processing fees?
The merchant pays the Merchant Service Charge (MSC) and the acquiring
bank will collect this automatically.
When and where is my account settled?
When you register with Web-Merchant, the variables captured on your application
form combine to define your account settlement terms. Settlement takes
place into an account of your choosing, and does not have to be with one
of our processing banks.
I wish to share my merchant facility with another company to enable
them to process online, is this possible?
No. You may only sell goods that you own.
Does Web-Merchant allow a re-billing or subscription payment service?
Yes, repeat billing (or subscription services) are included in the service.
How will I keep track of my transactions?
Merchants can keep track of all their transactions via their own personalised
online Account Management System. This system gives Web-Merchant merchants
complete control of their accounts. Also, the acquiring bank will send
statements to the merchant.
Is there a charge to transfer money from the processing "correspondent"
bank to the Merchant's Bank?
Small charges may be made by the processing bank for this service. These
charges vary from country to country and bank to bank. These charges will
not apply if you are being paid in Sterling to a UK Bank Account.
How do I become a Web-Merchant?
Complete the attached form, or telephone our main office +44 (0)1482 581629,
to have a form dispatched by post. Acceptance of your application is based
upon the information submitted.
Security
How secure is the service?
The services offered by Web-Merchant are fully secure and bank endorsed,
and utilise a range of industry standard and WorldPay unique security
and fraud prevention systems, combined with fault tolerant secure server
networks and firewalls. The processing centre is securely linked to NatWest
and other processing banks worldwide, who handle the credit card authorisations
on-line and process the transactions in real time. These private, and
hence secure interfaces use the same technology developed with Barclays
Bank for the BarclaySquare Shopping Mall secure payment system, launched
in May 1995. It is now well known that Internet payment solutions in general
are inherently more secure than other methods of making purchases in 'cardholder
not present' situations, such as telesales, or even when giving a card
to a waiter in a restaurant.
Do I have to have my own web site?
All merchants are required to have an Internet presence. However, you
will be able to input information on a simple screen on your computer,
enabling you to accept card details by phone, fax or mail-order. By simply
connecting to the Internet you will link to your Web-Merchant facility
and the transaction will be verified for you instantly. If you have a
number of transactions to check, simply stay on-line and submit them one
at a time. A one-off payment will provide you with the Web-Merchant Terminal
Facility which allows you to verify credit card transactions on your PC.
Can I operate from more than one web site?
You may operate from as may web sites as you wish, as long as the products
you are selling have been agreed with Web-Merchant in advance.
Will I need to arrange secure server facilities for my web site?
No, though some elements of your own web site may. The reason for this
is that card details are captured on the server, and order details are
also captured in a secure fashion from your server.
How do we feed the information from our shopping system to the payment
page?
We use a combination of systems, both public domain and bespoke. Depending
on the underlying integration method, this may involve SSL, Java and a
variety of self developed systems. Comprehensive integration guides are
supplied to all merchants and Web-Merchant is already integrated to all
the major shopping systems.
Does the message that gets sent back to the merchant to confirm payment
also include information about what the customer has actually bought,
so I know exactly what goods to deliver to that person?
Yes, the system is capable of doing this, however your shopping system
will usually handle this.
Can I have my payment pages in different languages?
Yes, the system has been designed to be multi-lingual.
Can the system handle multiple simultaneous transactions?
Yes. There are many machines to handle transactions, each with secure
connections to the processing banks. Should any one machine be busy processing
at any given time, then the next available machine will handle the incoming
transactions. This enables the processing of transactions extremely quickly
regardless of the number coming into the system.
What messaging standard have been adopted for processing payments?
TCP/IP encryption protocols to 128 bit SSL for messaging where required.
What technical support will be available to me?
Technical support is available to Web-Merchant merchants by way of a system
support help desk, which you can email during working hours. There is
also a bleeper system which you can use to call out of hours, but only
in emergency cases.
